Tvrđava Svetog Vlaha (also called Forteca) is a historic hilltop fortress located just above the town of Korčula. It is one of the lesser-known but highly scenic attractions on the island, offering both historical insight and breathtaking views.
Overview
- Type: Hilltop fortress / defensive outpost
- Location: Southwest of Korčula Old Town, in a forested area
- Distance: ~10–15 minutes walk uphill from the center
- Alternative name: Forteca
Unlike the famous town walls, this fortress stands outside the Old Town, built on a strategic elevation overlooking the surrounding area.
History
- The site originally hosted a medieval church (13th century) dedicated to Our Lady
- Due to the strong cult of St. Blaise (Sv. Vlaho), the place became associated with this saint
- The current fortress structure was later developed as part of Korčula’s wider defense system
Its elevated position made it ideal for:
- Monitoring land approaches
- Acting as an additional defensive point beyond the city walls
Architecture & Features
- Main structure: A multi-level circular tower that narrows slightly toward the top
- Built with thick stone walls, typical of Dalmatian fortifications
- Surrounded by trees and natural terrain, giving it a secluded feel
It’s not a large fortress complex—more of a compact watchtower-style stronghold.
Views & Experience
The biggest highlight is the panoramic viewpoint:
- Stunning views over Korčula Old Town and red rooftops
- The Adriatic Sea and nearby islands
- Especially beautiful at sunset or golden hour
Many visitors describe it as one of the best viewpoints on the island
Visiting Tips
- Free to visit (no official entrance fee)
- Wear comfortable shoes – short but slightly steep walk
- Best time: late afternoon or sunset
- Bring water – no facilities on site
Overall Feel
Tvrđava Svetog Vlaha is not about grand interiors or museums—it’s about location and atmosphere. Sitting above Korčula in peaceful greenery, it gives you a sense of how the island was once defended, while rewarding you with one of the most beautiful panoramic views in Dalmatia.
