History of Dubrovnik

Ancient & Early Medieval Origins (7th–12th century)

Founded in the 7th century by refugees fleeing the destruction of nearby Roman cities (like Epidaurum).
Originally known as Ragusa, it developed as a coastal settlement with strong maritime ties.
Came under the influence of the Byzantine Empire, benefiting from trade and protection.

Rise of the Republic of Ragusa (1358–1526)

In 1358, Dubrovnik gained independence from Venice and became the Republic of Ragusa.
Developed into a powerful maritime republic and trading hub, rivaling Venice.
Known for diplomacy, early abolition of slavery (1416), and advanced legal systems.
Built its famous city walls, ensuring strong defense and autonomy.

Ottoman Protection & Golden Age (16th century)

Paid tribute to the Ottoman Empire to secure protection and maintain trade routes.

Decline & Disasters (17th–18th century)

A devastating earthquake in 1667 killed thousands and destroyed much of the city.
Gradual decline due to shifting trade routes and rising powers like Atlantic nations.

Fall of the Republic (1808)

Occupied by Napoleon’s forces in 1806.
The Republic of Ragusa was officially abolished in 1808, ending centuries of independence.

19th–20th Century Rule Changes

Became part of the Austrian Empire after 1815.
Later included in Yugoslavia after World War I.
Maintained cultural importance but lost political autonomy.

Croatian War of Independence (1991–1992)

Dubrovnik was besieged and heavily bombarded during the war.
