Sokol Grad (Konavle) is a restored medieval fortress located in the village of Dunave, in the Konavle region near Dubrovnik. It sits dramatically on a 25+ meter high natural rock cliff, overlooking the entire Konavle valley and close to the border with Montenegro.
History in short
- The site has been inhabited since prehistoric times (over 2000 years BC)
- Used by Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, and later medieval rulers
- First written mention: 1373
- Came under the control of the Republic of Dubrovnik in the 15th century
- Served as a key border defense fortress against Ottoman expansion
- Abandoned in 1672 after losing military importance
