The Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) in Zadar, Croatia, is a unique architectural sound installation where the Adriatic Sea itself creates music.

It was designed by Croatian architect Nikola Bašić and opened in 2005 as part of Zadar’s waterfront redevelopment. At first glance, it looks like a set of large white marble steps leading down into the sea—but underneath those steps is a hidden system of pipes, chambers, and whistles.

When waves from the sea push air through these pipes, they produce soft, harmonic tones that constantly change depending on the strength of the waves and wind. The result is a natural, unpredictable “concert” that can sound calm and soothing or more dramatic during rougher seas.

The system is carefully tuned so that the sounds form musical chords rather than random noise, making it feel like the ocean is “playing” an organ. There are about 35 pipes arranged into groups that create several musical tones, and the sound emerges through small openings along the steps.

Beyond being an engineering artwork, it’s also a popular public space. People sit on the steps to relax, listen to the sound of the sea-turned-music, and watch the sunset over the Adriatic—something Zadar is especially famous for.

Just next to it is another installation, the Greeting to the Sun, which lights up at night, making this stretch of waterfront a mix of sound, light, and sea-driven art.

In short: the Sea Organ is an instrument played by nature itself, turning waves into an ever-changing piece of music you can sit inside and experience.
