The Torpedo Factory Rijeka is one of the most important industrial heritage sites in Rijeka and is considered the birthplace of the modern torpedo.
History
The origins of the factory date back to the 1860s, when naval officer Giovanni Luppis collaborated with engineer Robert Whitehead. Together, they developed the first successful self-propelled torpedo, which was tested in Rijeka in 1866.
Soon after, the world’s first torpedo production factory was established here.
Importance
The factory made Rijeka a global center of naval engineering and military innovation. Its torpedoes were exported worldwide and used by many navies, shaping naval warfare for decades.
Today, the site is recognized as part of Europe’s industrial heritage and is linked to the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
